Dianthus, or it's more well-known name Carnation, is perhaps one of the most common and notorious flowers in a florist's cooler. Interestingly, Dianthus means "Flower of the Gods' in Greek. So with the new year, it's time to rethink the Carnation and value this flower for what it is: a beautifully fragrant, long-lasting and versatile bloom. If you are the recipient of a gift of Dianthus, rejoice! You will have at least a few weeks of joy from them, provided you change the water every few days, as well as recutting the stems an inch or so each time. Then sit back and enjoy. Diantus are best when grouped tightly together, allowing their fluffy heads to form a gorgeous mound of color-and if color is what you love, Carnation can fill the bill!
